If you’ve been waiting for a Macbook docking station… Look no further. Bookendz is now offering docking stations for almost every Apple Laptop available (even the older PowerBooks). The dock allows for all of the peripheral devices normally connected to the side of the MacBook – Ethernet, Modem, FireWire, USB, Audio In, Audio Out to be plugged into the back of the dock, and remain plugged in, independent of the computer. Now, this convenience comes at a price…

But it is so Ugly! Big hunk’o black plastic hanging off the side of my pretty Mac. No thanks.
I would actually really like to have one of these for an external monitor and audio set up. The unfortunate thing is, that after paying 160 dollars for one of these, the optical out (audio out) becomes useless. I have a toslink to 3.5 converter so i can take advantage of the optical out on my macbook. It allows me to actually use true dolby 5.1. The whole point of getting a dock would be so i could take advantage of these great things (mini dvi out, usb’s, optical out). Plus its really ugly! Make something close to as beautiful as my mac and maybe ill pay half of what they want.
The other problem with bookends besides the looks is that you have to shutdown (not just put to sleep) your MBP to dock and undock, thereby removing any time and convenience associated with having a docking station. I can unhook and hook all my peripherals in much less time than it takes to turn on/shutdown my mac.
Why can’t apple come up with a direct access port on the bottom of the machine. Then third parties or apple themselves could design a beautiful docking station that you just press on to dock and maneuver some kind of trigger to release.
Does anyone know if the docking station can be used with the laptop in the folded configuration? I would like it to function as a true desktop, without the laptop screen in the way of my stand alone screen, while at home.
Webpilot,
I got this off the Bookendz website:
Q: Can I have the laptop closed when connected to an external monitor and still operate?
A: The laptop display needs to be set to mirroring with power connected to the laptop. After laptop lid is closed press any key or move mouse to wake the laptop up.

I hope this help…

Scooter,
Thanks for the advice! I tried it and it worked. Actually, I tried the same thing before but didn’t wait long enough. After you close the lid and move the mouse, you have to wait for a few seconds before the computer responds. It just requires a little patience…

I bought one for my 17″ MBP and all I can say is that it is a piece of overpriced crap that should never have been released to the market.
First off, it is fragile as hell. Second, the LAN connector didn’t line up with the on on my MBP so it never worked. I’ve been running the wireless while docked!
Thirdly, the docking station, ahem, port replicator, is putting pressure onto the MBP motherboard as when I push down on the MBP in the right rear corner near the magsafe connector I can hear it flexing. Kind of like the circuit board has pressure applied to it due too a poorly designed product.
I live in Amsterdam and bought one back from the States. I’m sending this thing in for a refund, as it does not do what it claims to, plus it looks like ****. And it may damage your MBP if you don’t ‘break it in’ properly.
$300 for a misaligned, cheaply built port replicator? Stay away.
Looks ugly, doesn’t work with new macs. Garbage. Actually, very expensive garbage.
