Makes sense to me… If you are going to the gym anyway, we might as well harness the energy from the treadmill, stair-master, stationary bike and even the fitness floor that would normally just be wasted. Of course, it takes energy just to run this equipment, but you are also putting energy into the workout. This can be captured into a storage battery or sent back to the power grid for later use. Now, we aren’t talking about a power plant of electricity here. Quote from the WSJ - “If all the exercise machines were in use 10 hours a day for a year, the gym could generate roughly $183 worth of electricity.” Not much, but if all the gyms in the country did this… Well, you do the math.
