Would you like to start canoeing, but never do because you don’t want to deal with a huge fiberglass object to haul around and store. This collapsible canoe folds into bag that can be strapped to your backpack. Bergans of Norway’s ALLY has an interlocking framework of tubular aluminium stays and ribs held together with spring loaded shock-cords making the canoe easy and quickly to assemble. At the bottom, between the framework and the reinforced PVC-skin, there is a closed cell foam mat that insulates, provides flotation, and provides the added safety of a double bottom. At the same time it provides shock absorbency from impact from items under water. The canoe’s flexibility allows it to ride over waves rather than crash into them. Its flexibility also makes encounters with underwater rocks a much less harrowing experience than when riding in a canoe of fiberglass.

  • You can store it folded when not in use.

  • The Ally canoe is made in Norway - spare parts are readily available.

  • The bottom mat of closed-cell foam insulates and is soft to your knees in the kneeling position. The foam mat also functions as a double bottom providing for a safe ride.

  • It is easily assembled.

  • The low weight makes it easy to carry for short distances.

  • The skin is easy to repair if damage occurs.

  • Ally has high load carrying capacity.

  • This makes it suitable also as a family canoe.

  • It is easy to transport on trains, busses, and in the trunk of a small car. The ALLY folding canoe can also be transported inside a bush plane.

  • Its flexibility allows it to ride on top of waves rather than crash into them, an especially useful feature when canoeing white water or big lakes with chop, or white cap conditions.

  • The canoe’s flexibility allows it to glide over and by rocks without sustaining damage.

  • The anatomic seats are fore- and aft-adjustable so that the rocker can be trimmed by body positioning and by baggage placement.

  1. Interesting concept, but I’m wondering how much time do you need to assemble it.
