Sony and Sandisk announced a new flash-based storage called SxS. Both companies will promote and develop and push their SxS flash memory specifications. The SxS memory card specification uses flash memory and complies with the ExpressCard industry standard, and the card connects directly to computer systems through the high-speed PCI-Express bus. Both companies claim the SxS cards will have a transfer rate of 800 Mb/sec and max burst speed of 2.5Gb/sec. The 2.5Gb/sec is the transfer rate defined in the specifications for ExpressCard interface, therefore, it’ll probably never reach that rate even at burst.
The new flash card will debut in the Sony’s upcoming XDCAM EX high-def camcorder, a prosumer 3-CCD that can record in various resolutions including 1080i and 720p. Sony believes that 16 GB SxS cards hold up to 120 minutes of HD video.
Sandisk and Sony say the SxS cards will be available later this year. No pricing has been announced.
Some obvious benefits of flash vs tape:
- Small form factor
- Less power consumption
- Portability - Plug the card into any PC that has an ExpressCard slot
- High-speed transfer rate.
- Capacity - As flash memory get larger in capacity, so does the larger size offering from SxS.
