We all know and love the NetFlix of the past. Get your DVD rentals in the mail, watch, and mail back. So simple… NetFlix is taking it to the next level with instant movies delivered right to your TV. For a one time purchase of $99 you just hook this device up to you TV and select from 10,000 movie and TV titles.
The NetFlix Media Player includes HDMI, Component Video, S-Video, Composite Video, Digital Optical Audio, and Analog Stereo Audio ports. It also offers wired Ethernet and 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi. Note that there is no hard drive. Only streaming can occur from the NetFlix servers. No HD either! Only “Almost” DVD quality.
I’m currently a NetFlix subscriber and I’ve been waiting for the concept of subscription, downloadable media for some time… but, the NetFlix Media Player (and the remote) has to be one of the ugliest electronic devices I’ve seen in awhile. Though I haven’t seen the menu screen shots, I would assume they look as good as the hardware. I guess they had a big executive meeting and said “What would Steve Jobs do… Let’s do the opposite.”
Highlights:
- Over 10,000 movies and TV episodes instantly
- No change in monthly Netflix costs and you continue to get your DVDs by mail
- Easily connects directly to your TV
- Pause, rewind or play anytime – just like a DVD
- Guaranteed to work with your TV
Yes, I also own an Apple TV and there is no way I’m replacing it with this hunk of ugly!
