With their new line of energy-efficient Bravia VE5 LCD HD televisions, Sony shows you how to go green without sacrificing performance or picture quality.
In fact, some features even exceed Energy Star 3.0 requirements. Take the 40″ model, whose integrated high-efficiency HCFL backlight minimizes power consumption by up to 65% vs. requirements set out by Energy Star 3.0.
The VE5 also features a Presence Sensor, which detects movement to help conserve energy. If you leave the room for 5, 30 or 60 minutes, the sensor turns the picture off automatically (though sound remains, so you can still hear the game!). If you’re not back within 30 minutes, the television shuts off completely.
An Energy Saving Switch means the television consumes zero power when in standby mode (most TVs consume some power, even when not in use).
The VE5 also has a Light Sensor that helps reduce power by lowering/raising the brightness of the backlight to suit the ambient lighting conditions of your room. So if you dim the lights for a romantic evening, the sensor automatically dims the backlight too, lowering the brightness to preserve energy.
Plus a host of other features…it’s still a Sony, after all.

Overall, this is not a cheap TV, but I think this is a case where you get what you pay for. It is a really great set.
