Looks like any other table, but the kotatsu table simply isn’t just like any other table. In the winter months when it is cold in most parts of Japan, the kotatsu is transformed from a standard coffee table to a comforting source of heat. The table comes equipped with a small electric heater which is attached beneath the table. The tabletop is removed and a small futon or cover is placed over the frame of the table. The tabletop is replaced over the futon which drapes to the floor to retain heat.
Most people are quite comfortable sitting on tatami (straw) mats with cushions in Japan. Many modern homes have carpeting too. The idea is to sit on the floor and tuck your feet in under the table and you warm up very quickly.
This is an energy-efficient way to stay warm during cold winter months. As spring comes ‘round, remove the cover and you have a plain table again.
